The Help

Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, the story follows three women whose lives become deeply connected through a secret writing project. Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan has grown up in a society where women are expected to marry and raise families, but she dreams of becoming a writer instead. After returning home from college, she takes a small writing position at a local newspaper, determined to build a life of her own. While working on a household advice column, Skeeter turns to Aibileen, a maid who has spent years caring for white families, for help and inspiration. Through Aibileen’s experiences and the stories shared by her outspoken friend Minny, Skeeter begins to understand the harsh realities that many domestic workers face every day. Despite the risks involved, the three women secretly begin collecting and writing down these stories. What starts as an ambitious writing project soon becomes an act of courage that challenges social expectations, exposes painful truths and brings the women closer together.
