A Hidden Life

Terence Malick turns once again to questions of faith, conscience, and the meaning of life, this time drawing inspiration from a true story. The film follows Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who refused to fight for Nazi Germany during World War II. Knowing that his decision could cost him his life, Franz refuses to betray his beliefs and is forced to confront the painful consequences of standing by his conscience while facing the fears and concerns of those closest to him. Blending the beauty of nature with an intimate exploration of the human spirit, Malick presents Franz’s moral struggle through his distinctive and visually poetic style. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, the film combines the director’s contemplative approach with the extraordinary true story of a man who remained faithful to his convictions in the face of death.
